Many role models of an ‘autonomous individuality’ seem to have disappeared: the ‘authentic’ artist, the intellectual, the ‘unworldly’ philosopher, the recluse, the dandy, the adored film diva. Today, do individuals – despite appearances to the contrary – blend indistinguishably into the crowd, destined to be swallowed up by the masses? This series of portraits is about the tension between the individual and the mob.
How much has the function of the individual towards society changed in recent decades? In this day and age, what role is reserved for ‘cultural producers’? If any at all, which attitude and thinking model is best suited here?
