‘The Tempest’ by Giorgione forms the starting point and, for the time being, is still the anchor. A man and a woman, the latter nursing a child, each occupy a corner of the painting, separated by a dark watercourse. One is protective and watchful, clothed; the other protective and compassionate, naked. A strange sculpture separates the foreground from the background. In the centre of the picture: a pool of water, a bridge above. Despite the storm, everyone and everything seems to be holding its ground. The water is still. The trees are static. For Tas, Oh Giorgio! functions like a giant puzzle in which all the pieces are interchangeable. She is specifically looking for the right approach to ‘the actively crumbling’ image and ‘shifting fragment’. She wants to be able to juggle the pieces. She hopes to find a language in paint for this, her own way of thinking and acting as a painter. Will it be an idyll, a utopia or a nightmare? Yet countless images do not make it past the strict assessment committee – with the painter as the sole arbiter. (Self-criticism is the blunt buffer between the studio and the outside world.) Even if the painting consists of an accumulation of errors, the result must still ‘add up’. This ‘adding up’ may be taken literally: certain images ‘vibrate’, or ‘live’, others do not. Beauty can be the result of many imperfections, but it is not active in every image. The Tray Portraits can therefore be seen as a kind of by-product. In the past, a rejected work would have ended up in the bin. Not this time – out of a kind of ‘recovered self-respect’. “I can hardly throw myself away, can I?” Though perhaps it is just as disrespectful to use your supposed likeness as a coaster or tray for all sorts of objects. A fine contradiction in terminis. But above all, a masking operation. These ‘things’ are sometimes random items lying around the studio, but they can just as easily be acquired objects that carry the scent of another person or a memory. Sometimes, the object also alludes to the act of painting or painting as an art form. The things seek their rightful place at a sore point in the portrait: the place where the paint or the image does not work. Their presence obscures things. Right there, where they weigh ‘on her’. (Occasionally with a shadow, but usually without). The Tray Portraits force you, as the viewer, to take a perspective. The face wants your gaze to be at eye level, you relate to the work ‘face-to-face’. The objects lie or stand upon the canvas and come into their own if you take a bird’s eye view. One painting – two points of view. And while the self-portraits parade their incompetence, these works allow the painter to show that she can do something after all: to paint a trompe-l’oeil. <img width="1855" height="2048" At myself. ‘I’ then paint ‘myself’”. Like a female Sisyphus, the painter tries to accomplish this task – never reaching the pinnacle but capturing a ‘self-image’ in paint. Obedient, as painters are, to the contemporary obligation towards self-knowledge and self-insight. Untimely portraits. A project doomed to failure! Post modernists have long since given up on the idea of ‘truth’ and ‘beauty’ (squandered?), or at least put them in brackets. The practice of painting also shows that there is more truth in the fragment, in the pieces, the cracks and the empty spaces, in the shifting of meaning across different canvases, than in one finished image. There is never a single truth in the individual painting, but many changing and shifting constructions that exist simultaneously. In the creation of the self-portraits, besides the physical reflection in the mirror and the mental image in her head, this active fragmentation plays a role. There is room in the painting for both the white space and the lamp black. For empty holes, cracks, faults, unexpected or unwanted colours, and all kinds of deviations. It also makes room for intuition, feeling, memory, compulsion and desire. More than that: the painting is a deliberate accumulation of this unexpected mess. It is a display of incompetence. The paintings parade their artificiality, their decorative flatness, flaunt their constructional flaws, and revel in the theatricality of their staring gaze. The painting celebrates the inability of the painter and the ignorance of the paint. No more resemblence. Long live imperfection! And yes... Self-Portrait Without Title. Although the series and works are untitled, each watercolour bears a suggested title in brackets. The associative titles are a contribution from the then seven-year-old son of the artist. The series of drawings, which are watercolours on regular drawing paper measuring 21 on 23 cm, were created in 2017 and 2018.
