A grisaille creates the impression that something is made of stone, but it also symbolised the victory of painting over sculpture. A ‘rosaille’ shows that there is nothing that is not made by ‘human hands’. Frail people, tender skin, fragile rose. It is the victory of fragile life over art.
The rosailles are also a kind of reminiscence or addenda to the series the painter makes. The ‘naked’ memory. Translated photos. Remember them once again. Aunt Gertrude. The painter as a kid in her shop – a present from St Nicholas. The first photo of her son. Gustav sleeping on two legs. One of her children’s drawings: paradise.
